“Staying the course” According to Wikipedia, “is a phrase used in the context of a war or battle meaning to pursue a goal regardless of any obstacles or criticism.”

Therefore, this is a war! This is the current you vs the you that you are becoming. And in any war, consistency is a huge ally. You know how they say “The man on the top of the mountain wasn’t placed there”? Well just like any war for the top, you’re going to need some tools:

“Never give up what you want most for what you want now…”

4 Reasons Consistency is so important when Staying On Course:

1. Consistency allows for measurement-Whatever gets measured gets better. You can’t determine if your idea, strategy or plan is working or not without giving it enough time to figure it out. Give your plan time to work before you decide it’s not working. Often times it may need a slight tweak here or there, but is in fact a solid plan. However, you will not discover this if you aren’t consistent with it.

2. Consistency establishes your reputation- Your reputation is really important in business. People like to work with people that they can trust. People will not trust you if you don’t have a good reputation. Business growth requires a track record of success. In order to achieve that success you must be consistent.

3. Consistency makes you relevant- This is similar to building your reputation. Your family, friends, employees, customers, teammates, etc need a consistent flow of information from you. It has to be some what predictable. People need to know they can expect a certain level of quality or work, or type of information from you.

4. Consistency maintains your message-Your teammates, employees, and co-workers are all paying more attention to you than you may initially think. Consistency in your leadership will create a model of how they should behave. You will be surprised by how many other children or family members are looking to you for your leadership; and being consistent helps them realize they can also stick to their goals and dreams.

5 Tips on Staying On Course

1. Show up BEFORE you are ready- A lot of times we miss out on an opportunity because we are afraid to take it. We may think we aren’t smart enough, or someone can do it better than us. We may wait around until we finish reading this book, or that book or wait until we finish earning some credentials we are working on. Be fearless and go for it! Give it everything you’ve got!  You’ll be successful at it.

“Wait- is that a blog logo?!! Uh, just- uh disregard that part please…”

2. Don’t allow others to distract you- Believe or not, we desperately seek the approval of other people. Either we ask for their approval, or we look for it in the form of “likes” on social media. To be successful, we really can’t worry about what people think about us. We can’t put too much value in their compliments nor their complaints. We have to put on our blinders and keep moving forward.

3. Be disciplined – It’s so easy to lose focus on our goals. To be successful we have to avoid temptation and distraction at all cost. You also must have the ability to prioritize your different projects. Keep the main thing the main thing.

4. Reflect on your journey- Take time to reflect on your past accomplishments as well as your past failures. This will keep you grounded, but also help you become aware of any patterns or behaviors you have that may not be as supportive as you think.

5. Evolve every day- “Every new day we get better in every way!!” Always learn and grow. Remember if you aren’t growing you’re dying. 🙂
